How to Preserve Willow Branches for Flower Arrangements

Preserve Willow Branches for Flower Arrangements

Pussy willow, or Salix caprea, is a deciduous shrub that grows in many temperate regions. It is prized for its silvery-gray foliage and the soft white catkins (or flowers) it produces in late winter and early spring. While most people use pussy willow branches for decorative flower arrangements, preserving them isn’t difficult. Follow these guidelines to keep your willow branches looking fresh for longer periods of time.

How To Preserve Pussy Willow Cuttings

The best way to preserve fresh willow cuttings is by keeping them in water or drying them out.

If you plan on using the cuttings soon with other fresh flowers, Place the branches in a vase or jar with plenty of water. Make sure that the container is wide enough to accommodate all of the stems and leaves without overcrowding them. Change the water every few days, treating the cut ends with a floral preservative. This will help prevent bacteria growth which can cause wilting and discoloration of the leaves.

Alternatively they can be used as dried floral arrangements and crafts.

Drying Pussy Willow

  • Cut the branches of the pussy willow when the catkins are in their prime.
  • Place the vase out of direct sunlight, as this will cause the catkins to fade faster. Keep it in a cool room away from any heating source or fireplaces for best results.
  • Allow two weeks for the pussy willow branches to dry out completely before using them in arrangements or crafts. You can tell they are dry when they have become stiff and brittle, and no longer bend easily when touched.

How to Decorate with Pussy Willows

1. Place as a centerpiece: Place pussy willows in a vase or other container and use it as a centerpiece for your dining room table. You can also place it on an entryway console for an unexpected touch of nature in your home.

2. Hang from the ceiling: Hang branches of pussy willows from the ceiling using fishing line or clear thread to create a whimsical atmosphere. This is especially effective above a dining table or in an outdoor space such as a patio or deck.

3. Use as wall décor: Hang single branches of pussy willow on the wall with nails, tacks, or hooks for an interesting visual effect. This look works great in bedrooms, offices, and nurseries alike!

4. Add to wreaths: Incorporate pussy willow branches into wreaths made with faux flowers and greenery for an eye-catching springtime decoration that can be displayed indoors or outside your front door.

5. Create art: Gather several branches of pussy willow together and hang them on your wall like artwork! You can also use them to make art prints by placing them onto paper before covering with glass – this is especially beautiful when combined with other botanical elements such as ferns and leaves.
